ABOUT MATT

They say if you really love what you do, you don’t work a day in your life. I’ve found that to be mostly true.

The guiding principles of my career have  been to chase stories that resonate and to always put the reader first. Whatever ups and downs I’ve experienced, I’ve managed to keep writing for a living because I’ve always tried to obey those principles. I’ve also learned that if you’re committed to those principles, it can transcend mediums, and I’m as comfortable today writing screenplays and books as I am writing feature stories and personal profiles, which formed the bulk of my early career.

Today, as VP of Content & Communications for Robert Irvine, I oversee all aspects of talent booking, content creation, and design for Robert Irvine Magazine, a digital healthy lifestyle publication featuring stories of uncommon success from people spanning all walks of life. All issues are available to download or stream at RobertIrvineMagazine.com and issuu.com.  Notable interviews featured in the magazine to date include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Deepak Chopra, Lewis Howes, Gary Sinise, Joe Manganiello, Gary Player, Peter Facinelli, Jim Breuer, Rod Lurie, and Jake Tapper. A special print edition of Robert Irvine Magazine released on newsstands everywhere in December 2018.

In addition to running the magazine, I help to ensure consistency of messaging and voice across the Robert Irvine family of brands, write op-eds and speeches, and work with the PR team on media opportunities.

In 2018, I co-authored Family Table By Robert Irvine, a cookbook and essay collection outlining how to use the kitchen to bring your family closer together. In 2015, I co-authored Fit Fuel, a healthy living manual, also with Robert Irvine. Our third book, Overcoming Impossible, is centered on business leadership.

Formerly, as Deputy Editor of Muscle & Fitness I top edited most of the magazine and wrote features and various departments. I also did on-camera work for muscleandfitness.com and consulted regularly with the digital team.

From 2010 to 2016, I wrote extensively for the feature wells of both Muscle & Fitness and Men’s Fitness magazines. Cover story highlights include: Michael Strahan (October 2015), Terry Crews (February 2015), Dwayne Johnson (September 2014 and March 2014), John Cena (April 2014), Hugh Jackman (August 2013), Henry Cavill (July 2013), and Drew Brees (Oct. 2012).

In 2015 I profiled transgender powerlifter Janae Marie Kroczaleski, a story which was named to the list of Notable Sports Writing in the anthology The Best American Sports Writing 2016.
